Esme

Threats.

I’d been threatened more times that I could count in my career, but the one I’d found on the front seat of my car had terrified me more than almost any before.

You will die if you continue.

Continue what? Continue fighting crime? Continue trying to get my life back? Continue to hate my ex as well as Sebastian? I couldn’t stomach even thinking about the night before, nor did I want to go back to the dark house tonight. It had to be from Mikhail. He was upping his game, shifting from the good cop to the bad one, only his dark side was brutal and ugly. I shuddered at the thought.

Maybe seeing my second mutilated body of the week also had something to do with it. Thank God I’d made a single friend since moving, my realtor turning into a good friend. Given her line of work, she certainly had interesting stories to tell. I could use that tonight more than I’d been able to express when I’d called, begging to spend the night.

I stood on her doorstep, marveling at her beautiful landscape and pristine yard. She must spend a fortune to keep the grass so green, the flowers absolutely perfect. Maybe one day I’d have that kind of interest or time.

“There you are,” Betsy said as she opened the door.

“I didn’t know if you’d prefer red or white tonight, so I brought both.”

She frowned then threw her arms around me. She’d heard the odd tone in my voice, the combination of anger and fear I’d felt all day. I hadn’t even returned to my house for a change of clothes. That’s how rattled I’d been.

“You didn’t have to bring a thing but yourself. Get in here. You look terrible,” Betsy said then laughed. “Well, not terrible, just like you’ve been hit by a truck.”

“You’re not winning any points, my friend.”

I trailed behind her into the kitchen. She always made certain the few times we’d gotten together that she prepared a small feast.

“Let’s go with red tonight. Then we can always switch to tequila. It looks like you might need the extra kick.”

“Again, no points,” I said, finally able to laugh. “Do you have a shirt I can borrow?”

“What’s wrong with the one you’re wearing and of course I do.”

What was wrong? It smelled like him. Every inch of my skin smelled like him. God, I could barely say his name. Just being around him unnerved the hell out of me.

“I just… Work today. Dead bodies and blood and…”

“Ugh. Don’t say anything else. The worst I had to deal with was a jerk for a client who blamed me for not being able to find a house with a marina for sale. Make yourself at home. I’ll open the wine.”

“Thank you.” I wandered into her bedroom, still unable to get Sebastian out of my mind. His touch still burned me, searing every nerve ending. Being with him the night before had been ridiculous.

And sexy.

And passionate.

And filthy.

I yanked one of her tee shirts out of the drawer, almost ripping my blouse in an effort to unbutton it.
